"I joined the board some years ago to play a part in our professional organization and to interact with other architects, interns and students on worthwhile projects. The energy and commitment of the other members keep me coming back.

A resident of Boulder County since 1987, my architectural consulting practice focuses on commercial, industrial, adaptive re-use, and health care design. In addition, I am involved in peer review, due diligence services and historic preservation.”

"I originally joined the board in an effort to bring an emphasis of sustainability to the organization. I have since become much more ingrained in the leadership than I originally planned, and it has been a real pleasure and a great learning experience. I feel that I have grown personally, and there is no question that I have benefited professionally. After attending the AIA Colorado 2008 Design Conference, I started taking to other sole proprietors and we decided to band together to enter a national design competition to see how well we worked together. And we won! I am now a partner in an 11-person firm. I am still trying to bring as much of an emphasis on sustainability as possible.”

Director
Dario Barcena, Assoc. AIA

"I decided to join the AIA Colorado North Board so my word counts. I want to be able to give my opinion on different issues brought to my attention in the past, and to help the profession of architecture prevail in the future. I want to support our chapter with my time and ideas, to find better and more efficient ways to improve the different projects that occur during the year.”

Dario Barcena was born in Puebla, Mexico. He decided to study architecture at the University of the Americas Puebla after being influenced by the richness of the Spanish colonial architecture of his city and also by the contemporary Mexican architecture of Luis Barragan. He had the opportunity to study abroad at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom. While there, he combined European technology and Mexican traditional architecture and created a mix of ideas between the two cultures. After working in Puebla for two years, he decided to move to Colorado to seek out new experiences and opportunities for growth within his career. His experience in architecture includes a variety of residential and commercial projects. Currently, he works for the Neenan Company in Fort Collins, Colo. His hobbies include golf, fishing and hiking.
