The Membership Outreach Committee meeting will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 19, from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m., at AIA Colorado (303 E. 17th Ave., Ste. 110, Denver, CO 80203). This committee is responsible for welcoming new members and familiarizing them with AIA Colorado, and for supporting current members.

The committee looks for ways to create opportunities for member networking, to assist with member issues, to recognize the accomplishments of members, to increase member value and to encourage new members.

With the AIA National Convention coming to Denver June 20-22, we are focused on providing member value and increasing member activity within the organization. If you are interested in participating, you may just show up or you can contact Alaina Gonzales at Alaina@aiacolorado.org.

All Assoc. AIA members are invited to join AIA Colorado West for Construction Documents & Services on Tuesday, May 21, from 5 – 9 p.m. Each webinar is $35 for members and $50 for nonmembers and access instructions will be sent via email at the time of registration. The AGCC’s highly successful Breakfast with the Board event is coming to Colorado Springs on May 22 at the Olympic Training Center. Mayor Steve Bach will kick-off the presentation with his vision for the City and activities affecting construction. Vince Colarelli will present details for the recently announced $800M T5 Data Centers campus anticipated to bring 400-600 new jobs to the area.

According to a recent article at www.datacenterknowledge.com, the T5 Data Centers campus project marks a major step forward in Colorado Springs’ ambitions as a data center destination, and continues a steady expansion by Atlanta-based T5. T5 currently offers wholesale data center space in business-critical data center facilities in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Charlotte with new projects announced in Portland and Colorado. As part of T5’s larger strategy of leveraging free cooling, the new Colorado Springs campus will be able to take advantage of the high plains climate by using the cooler, drier external air to reduce air conditioning and operating costs. The location is also strategically placed close to the Denver Technology Center, a tech and communications hub, and will serve as a central data relay center to lower latency for business-critical enterprise applications country-wide.

Join AIA Colorado South for a hard hat tour of Fire Station #21, at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 23. The active job site requires that all attendees arrive promptly at 4:30 p.m. and bring their own personal protective equipment (PPE), i.e. a hard hat, eye protection, class two safety vest, and hard soled footwear.

Our next Café des Arts lecture featuring Frederick Pichon will be, Heaven on Earth: The Art of Classical French Gardens. In the 17th century, Andre Le Notre drew on a long tradition of European gardens to create the jardins a la Francaise.

His lifelong search for an balance between baroque and classicism, between Nature and Order, between Liberty and Despotism was fruitful. Walking in the gardens of Versailles today still gives us a universal sense of equilibrium. It also had a strong influence on American history.

Join AIA Colorado on Friday, May 31, from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., for 2012 Accessibility Overview. The program will be held at the PPA Event Center (2105 Decatur St., Denver, CO 80211).

This class is an overview of the scoping provisions for accessibility in the International Building Code and the technical provisions of the ICC/ANSI A117.1 Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities. The seminar will also discuss differences between the provisions enforced by building department and the American Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines.

The class qualifies for 7.5 AIA HSW continuing education learning units (LU). Under the state of Colorado’s rules for continuing education for state licensure renewal, this program should meet the requirements for 7.5 HSW CEH.

All AIA Colorado members are invited to attend the AIA Colorado West Webinar, Architectural Acoustics, presented by D.L. Adams Associates, Inc., on Tuesday, June 4, from noon – 1 p.m.

This course offers an overview of architectural acoustics, using appropriate terminology and basic examples, so that participants can address common design and remedial acoustical issues.

Join AIA Denver for Structural Systems on Saturday, June 8, from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., in room 440 at the University of Colorado Denver, College of Architecture and Planning (1250 14th St., Denver, CO 80202). This seminar provides an overview of the impacts that floodplains have on building design and includes discussions on the various flood zone types, an introduction to critical facilities, an overview of various flood proofing design options and best practices for removing buildings from the floodplain.

The Arvada Chamber of Commerce is seeking architects for our Sand in the City! event. Sand in the City! is a sand sculpture contest, to be held June 14th. Architects who get involved will be matched with a team in the contest and be involved in the planning and sculpting processes. The Deadline to be sign up as a team architect is Wednesday, April 10, 2013. The event will be in The Arvada Center lawn on the corner of 69th and Wadsworth.

During this event, Narcissus Quagliata will present his public projects which are installed in three continents, including the Dome of Light in Taiwan, the largest glass illuminated dome in the world, and Divinity of Light, a modern project installed on Michelangelo's last Basilica in Rome. He will also discuss the significance of light as a medium in today's environment, as well as present his work on the figure as a symbol that mirrors the human soul.

Participate in the AIA Denver 21st Annual Golf Tournament, on Monday, July 15, at the Legacy Ridge Golf Course (10801 Legacy Ridge Pkwy, Westminster, CO 80031). Registration and continental breakfast begin at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The tournament is played in a four-person scramble format and includes green fees, golf carts, breakfast, lunch, an on-course beverage, awards and goodie bags.
