RMLUI’S 21ST ANNUAL LAND USE CONFERENCE
The Wilderness City:
Nature, Culture and Economy in the Next West
March 1 & 2, 2012
The Rocky Mountain West is characterized by majestic peaks, rolling
prairies, rugged plains and vast open spaces. At the same time, the West
is home to rapidly growing cities like Denver, Las Vegas, Albuquerque,
Salt Lake City, Phoenix and Boise, as well as countless small towns
trying to remain viable in an increasingly urbanizing region.
Interestingly, as urban centers continue to grow, they are seeking to
reconnect their local cultures and economies to what remains of their
native ecology. Meanwhile, rural communities are looking for ways to
support economic development while maintaining their strong ties to
local landscapes and natural resources.
Wilderness Cities attempt to blend the wild and the urban seamlessly, to bring nature back into our communities. RMLUI’s
21st Annual Land Use Conference presents an opportunity to explore
approaches to development that not only make Western communities vibrant
economic centers, but also strengthen their connections to the land.

We cannot envision our lives without electricity. This powerful invention has successfully extended our productive hours of the day well into the night. Electric lighting, television, computers, and handheld devices influence our visual system throughout the day and well into the evening hours. How do these technologies affect our health?
IESRMS will be offering an advanced lighting seminar covering the effects of lighting beyond our visual experience to our well-being and health. Optical radiation influences our sleep behavior, our eating behavior, our alertness, and even our stress levels. How does this information influence how we design lighting in the future?
You will be hearing about the most recent research and case studies on this topic, and learn about lighting design approaches to support a healthy visual environment. This course offers valuable insights and techniques for all design professionals who influence the built environment.
The companion IES Seminar Light & Health binder can be purchased separately when registering. This optional text features an extensive bibliography of references and elaborate scientific data, graphs and research on this topic.
This course qualifies for 3 hrs. of CEU's. It's a full night of learning and networking. We look forward to meeting you!
To register, see link below or visit www.iesrms.org.
Sincerely,
IES Rocky Mountain Section/Denver |

The SEGD Colorado (x)change is a forum designed to provide a monthly platform for our creative community to gather and intimately discuss and (x)change our thoughts, feelings and ideas on a variety of important design-oriented topics ranging from design practice, industry, cultural, education, mainstream topics and more!
March Topics of Discussion:
More often than not, today’s young designers are poorly trained to meet the demands of the professional design world. As such, it is imperative that design education and curriculum evolve and change. It is time we create a new breed of designer: one whose knowledge goes beyond the understanding of drawing programs and basic form and function, into a designer who can work across disciplines, who understands the interlocking complexities of human and social behavior, incorporates knowledge of political, cultural, national and world issues, and has an understanding of business, technology and provides appropriate methods of validation of concepts. So what should this design education look like? What types of knowledge should we be emphasizing? What type of skills would you like a young designer to have? How do we stop letting the uninformed continue to train the uninformed? This forum is to discuss your ideas of what the future of design education should be!
Green Inspirations
It’s March and with St. Patty’s Day as this month’s holiday hallmark, it’s only appropriate that we be a bit cliche and celebrate our love of everything green. So how do you do green?
Do you think green?
Act green?
Eat green?
Shop green?
Build green?
Design green?
See green?
For some going green may mean we will discuss best practices, strategies and share scenarios of sustainability. Or it could mean we talk about ideas and stories of creative reuses of reclaimed materials. Or designs that work with the Earth. Or share solar or organic LED lighting techniques that give us new bright ideas. This forum is for all to come, share, and be inspired about how SEGD Colorado and your creative community are participating in the green revolution!

AIA Colorado is a proud sponsor of the Mizel Arts & Cultural Center film, Incessant Visions – Letters from an Architect, directed by Duki Dror Israel.
Architect Erich Mendelsohn wrote 1,200 letters to his wife, Louise, many containing powerfully drawn sketches of his ideas. These dramatic drawings form the foundation of this captivating documentary. This visionary German Jewish architect became the busiest architect in Germany with the help and support of his wife, who was herself a talented cellist. Designing the Einstein Tower, Schocken Department Stores, and the Universum Cinema, and a beautiful home for his wife, these sorts of opportunities suddenly disappeared as the Nazis rose to power. Forced to flee Germany and leave behind the home and life he loved, he then worked in England, Israel, and the U.S.
Award-winning filmmaker Duki Dror, presents an illuminating documentary bringing to life the vibrant work and relationships of an extraordinary individual.

Passive
House is quickly beckoning the attention of major media outlets with regard to
buildings and energy performance. The building standard and concept have been
highly successful in Europe, responsible for a niche economy, and more local
being recently accepted into Portland Oregon’s code. Passive House is beautiful
in its open form and becomes a recognizable force when combined with other
rating systems. Passive House’ roots are local however, starting here in the US
with the super insulated homes of the 1970’s, but with tighter construction
techniques and better building science that produces a thermal bridge free,
airtight, truly super insulated shell. Passive House building methods are
fundamentally different from common practices and the Passive House Planning
Package models are proven. Join us as we look at the future opportunities of
LEED collaboration with Passive House.

Friday, March 30, 2012 8:30:00 AM
Join AIA Colorado South on Friday, March 30, from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m., for Advanced Means of Egress and International Existing Building Code, presented by BCER Engineering. The program will take place at the Penrose Library Carnegie Reading Room (20 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80903).
This class qualifies for 8.0 AIA HSW continuing education hours (CEH). Under the state of Colorado’s rules for continuing education for state licensure renewal, this program meets the requirements for 8.0 HSW CEH.
Advanced Means of Egress is an advanced discussion of the means of egress requirements included in Chapter 10 of the 2009 International Building Code. The presentation will include detailed discussions on the design and review of the means of egress in unusual occupancies. Subjects included in the class are malls, assembly occupancies, special egress components, smoke proof enclosures, horizontal exits and exit passageways. Practical examples will be used to illustrate code requirements. This class is designed for those students that have a basic understanding of how the means of egress is designed and reviewed.
International Existing Building Code (IEBC) addresses the use of the International Existing Building Code and focuses on the fundamental requirements of IEBC that are placed on an existing structure that undergoes repair work, alteration, renovation activity or construction of an addition, and the effect of a change in the building’s occupancy classification. The class discusses the prescriptive requirements, work area requirements and compliance alternative methods of evaluating work in an existing building. Topics include regulations of additions, alterations and repairs, changes of occupancy considerations, compliance alternatives and application of the IEBC.
This class is $75 for members and $125 for nonmembers. Download the registration form. The deadline to register is Tuesday, March 27 at 4 p.m. For more information, contact Jenna Cather at jenna@aiacolorado.org.

Fitting reinforcement into congested masonry walls can be tricky. We have to worry about anchorage, development length, splices, hooks, stirrups, and all the rest. The way we treat lap splices in masonry has been constantly changing since the formula was updated with the 1999 MSJC Code. Did you know the formula for lap splice length continues to be modified? Recent research is leading to a reformulation of how we look at lap splices and development length in masonry. Don't be left behind – see what is happening now and what is in store for future code cycles as we discuss code requirements for steel detailing in masonry walls. We'll finish with simple diagrams showing code requirements for vertical and horizontal reinforcement in the different seismic zones.

Rain Screen Walls are the latest version of Cavity Walls. They not only have a gap behind the veneer to manage moisture penetration, they also have a vented cavity that allows this air gap to dry out. A Rain Screen Wall also allows natural convection to cool this cavity. Taught by Diane Travis at Rocky Mountain Masonry Institute, 686 Mariposa St, Denver.

This seminar is aimed at designers who want to use masonry (brick, block and stone) but have budget concerns. Some value-engineering options work just fine, but others can significantly affect the long-term viability of the building. It is always better to understand your options before you build the structure. We will talk about effective structural design concepts, compare the costs of different competing wall systems, and understand how some common masonry details affect constructability and cost.
